Fresh twist as NNPP sacks BoT chairman who expelled Kwankwaso from party
The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) took the step of expelling its Board of Trustees (BoT) chairman, Boniface Aniebonam, along with several other national officers due to alleged anti-party activities.
Agbo Major, the national publicity secretary, and numerous other officials were also affected by this decision.
During the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, the national legal adviser, Robort Hon, accused these individuals of undermining the NNPP and engaging in actions detrimental to the party’s interests.
Hon specifically accused Aniebonam of establishing a parallel group within the party with the intent of sowing discord.
“At the NEC meeting of the NNPP held on August 29th, 2023, in Abuja, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, Agbo Major, and several others were expelled from the party,” stated the NNPP’s legal adviser.
During the meeting, motions were put forth concerning the party’s logo, constitutional amendments, the ratification of state caretaker committees, and the suspension of two articles in the NNPP’s 2022 constitution.
Prominent figures in attendance included Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State, Acting National Chairman Malam Abah-Kawu Ali, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, Engr. Buba Galadima, and others.
The NEC determined that the actions taken by the suspended individuals, which included holding an unauthorized Board of Trustees meeting in Apapa, Lagos, were null and void.
The NEC also passed motions to extend the tenure of the acting national chairman, Abah-Kawu Ali, and to redesign the party’s logo.
Governor Abba Yusuf expressed his commitment to collaborating with Rabiu Kwankwaso, the national leader of the party, to revitalize the NNPP.
Olayoku Dipo, the national secretary of the party, mentioned that efforts were underway to establish a legitimate BoT in alignment with the party’s constitution. He also indicated plans to alter the party’s logo, suggesting that the current logo negatively impacted the party’s performance in the 2023 general elections.
Additionally, Buba Galadima, the NNPP BoT secretary, praised the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) for its role in stabilizing the party.
In a related development, the factional BoT of the NNPP, led by Aniebonam, suspended Rabiu Kwankwaso during a meeting in Lagos. The factional BoT secretary, Babayo Abdullahi, stated that Kwankwaso was suspended for six months due to anti-party activities. The NWC of the party was also suspended. The factional BoT appointed new national officers to fill these roles.
