A peaceful Arab country that has a Christian president

Lebanon is a small but influential country in the middle east. The Lebanese Republic is bordered by Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south, while Mediterranean Sea is by the west. Lebanon has a very rich history of religious and ethnic diversity.

The official language of Lebanon is Arabic and it’s capital is Beirut. The population of Lebanon consists of about 60% Muslims and over 33% Christians.

The Lebanese constitution states that the president must be a Maronite Christian, the prime minister must be a Sunni Muslim and the speaker of the house a Shia Muslim.

For some time the presidential position remained vacant until the election of Michel Aoun on October 2016.

Christians in Lebanon are politically powerful. Lebanon has the highest number of Christians in the middle east. Many Christians in Lebanon have Muslim ancestry.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun is the only Christian head of state in the middle east.

An agreement was made to end the civil war in Lebanon which lasted from 1975 to 1990.

Michel Aoun is a former Army general.

Lebanon is relatively a prosperous country compared to the situation of its neighbours in the middle east.
